Lab Exercises in Astronomy: Quasars

We know now that quasars are supermassive black holes gorging on gas at the centers of distant galaxies. But in the early 1960s, astronomers knew none of this. Students will retrace the path of discovery in this astronomy lab exercise, measuring the spectrum and brightness variation of 3C 273 to unravel this mysterious object's nature.
